1. That contour lines are the most reliable feature on a map – unless a quarry has recently been opened, the land does not move as often as fence lines or buildings can.
2. (In certain areas) it really is possible to navigate from a map that only has contour lines on it, although I think it may be a little more challenging somewhere as flat as the Fens!
3. When navigating from a map with contour lines at 10m intervals, it’s incredible how much variation can happen in the land between those 10m lines.
4. Waterproof walking gaiters are all well and good but they’re not much use when the water(July hail!) runs down your legs and into the gaiters at the top!
